Ogleforth is within the walls of the City of York and covers the sites of Roman legionary barracks. Dominated by the Church in Medieval times, it included the mansion of the treasurers of York Minster and the parish church of St John Delpike. After the reformation a grammar school was established here and major secular properties included the mansion of the Constable family and Sir Valentine Browne’s extension to St William’s College. In the eighteenth century Ogleforth was the home of gentry and had an assembly room for their entertainment in the season. The nineteenth century brought industry including wallpaper manufacturing, book binding, a brewery and coachworks whilst also providing homes for lawyers, tradesmen and city workers. The twentieth century saw a decline with overcrowded tenements, poorly maintained buildings and warehouses, but that has been transformed in the last couple of decades and Ogleforth is now a quiet inner city street about to become entirely residential.
