The distinction between travellers and tourists is an important one, and James Hope was undoubtedly an inveterate and intrepid traveller, especially in Eastern Europe and the Balkans, from his time at Oxford until he took office in Lloyd George's coalition and then Baldwin's governments. Sometimes he went with friends and family members, but mostly alone, often on horseback and occasionally by train and ship.

Towards the end of his life he deicded to write a record of what he could recall about his various trips, and this is now publishered here for the first time. He saw this troubled region both before and after the First World War and met many of the leading political figures there. Sounding at times like some character from a John Buchan novel, he took his stohgun with him and was always on the lookout for sport, which the British Consuls in the places he visited were often able to arrange.
