This highly original historical novel traces the fortunes and misfortunes of James Harley, the benevolent Lord of the Manor of Appleton, who suffers from the rebellious attitude of his tenants; they of course have their own personal hatreds amongst themselves.

Then war breaks out with Spain and France and Commander. Harley returns to the King’s Navy. He joins Commodore Anson’s memorable campaign on the South Seas and Pacific, experiencing violent sea-storms rounding Cape Horn and a terrific battle as his flagship captures the Spanish treasure galleon out from Acapulco in Mexico.

The British fleet then visits the Celestial Empire of China for repairs.

Finally, having sailed round the whole world for the first time they fire a 70-gun salute to announce their return to their home port of St. Helier, Isle of Wight. Their vessels are heavily loaded with Spanish silver for the Bank of England in London.

This interesting novel presents a story of love and amorous jealousy and also a portrayal of both the criminal aspects and the sublime cultural inspirations of Hanoverian Great Britain, including the wonderful music of George Frideric Handel and Doctor Arne (‘Rule Britannia’), the aesthetic and social commentaries of the brilliant painter and engraver William Hogarth and the novels of Daniel Defoe, as well as the works of Laurence Sterne (Uncle Toby) and Henry Fielding (Tom Jones).
