And then she finds Florence Chave’s diary – written 75 years ago. Flo, somewhat to the dismay of her family, gets engaged to a penniless, Anglo-Indian doctor who works in the local lunatic asylum.
As the months drag on with no news of Hugh, Jane desperately tries to distract herself by getting to know Flo and her world of the 1890s through her diary. Under the influence of the goahead Flo, Jane’s own social life begins to blossom, and she starts to find her courage.

The Daily Sketch is re-running some of Hugh’s old Klambi cartoons. There’s a little column saying he is still missing. It looks horribly like an obituary. Flo says her parents are not elated about her engagement. Is it because they are going to lose the daughter who will care for them in old age? Somehow, they don’t strike me as that sort. Must have taken a lot of guts in those days to get engaged to a man your parents disapproved of.
