Initially our parents were struggling with severe hardships but we children knew nothing of that. Air raids, ration books and one coal fire during the day to heat the house was the norm. We lived through amazingly changing times. Horse and cart and steam engines gave way to electric cars and hydrogen powered trains. Airships were superseded by spitfires and supersonic passenger aircraft. More recently we are alarmed by weaponized, pilotless drones.

The book relates our struggles to realise our dreams and earn a living. During the 1950/60s the economy began to improve, we were able to purchase a telephone, a TV, a refrigerator and an old death trap of a car. We enjoyed rock n roll, jazz, cinema and weekly dances immensely.

Affluence brought with it many changes. There was a decline in Christianity, recreational drugs, crime and other social ills caused an increase in mental illness and homelessness.

In the final chapter the author analyses many controversial subjects such as global warming, capital punishment, crime, law and order and multiculturalism. With the best of intentions he suggests reactionary solutions to make it a better world.

John Lee was born in 1937. He was educated at Bridlington Grammar School, Boulevard Nautical College, Hull, Chorley College of education and Lancaster University. He spent years in the merchant navy but most of his life as a teacher.

“All my stories are true,” So my dear friend John will say. Much to the amusement of the family and friends. They invariably are true and this story is no exception. What a wonderful read and the truth shines through – with lovely warm humour. John P Davies
