The Tears is the English translation of Al-ʿAbarāt, an Arabic course book often taught in the final years of the Dars-e-Nizami curriculum. Al-ʿAbarāt is also taught at Universities worldwide as part of an advanced Arabic learning programme, especially in Cairo, at the Al-Azhar University. This Higher Arabic literature is written by an Egyptian scholar called Mustafā Lutfī Al-Manfalūtī. Al-ʿAbarāt, translated as ‘The Tears’, was first published in 1915, containing the author’s own stories in conjunction with other short translated stories.

Mustafā Lutfī Al-Manfalūtī, known as the reviver of the Arabic language, was a hafiz of the holy Quran as well as a distinguished and highly talented Arabic writer of his time. He was born in Manfalūt, Egypt on 1876 and passed away on 25th July 1924.

Al-ʿAbarāt consists of eight short stories. Four short stories, The Orphan, The Veil, The Abyss and The Punishment are the authors very own production. The remaining four are the translations of French plays and adaptations. These are, The Martyrs, The Remembrance, The Reward and The Victim. Two of them are translations of the works of Chateavbriand, who was a French Diplomat and a writer. The Victim is the translation of Alexandre Dumas Fils’s, La Dame aux Camellias (1848).

These touching stories are compassionate tales of love, hope and kindness amidst tragedy grievance and sacrifice. The Tears is designed to evoke every emotion and sympathy for the diverse characters, melting even the hardest of hearts. After reading this book, you will never be the same.

Alongside the English translation, this book also contains the original Arabic text in order for students to make a lingual comparison, and cross translate for meaningful analysis. The main purpose of this work is to enhance the higher reading and analytical skills of Arabic students, enabling them to read the most sophisticated pieces of Arabic texts effectively.
