Consciousness is created by a neuronal architecture that brings together a great deal of disparate sensory information, including some collected over extended periods of time, and stores it in a consultable form.   Much of the network is of relatively recent origin, but its operations are guided by more ancient areas of the brain, evolved to deal with the most essential forms of behaviour.
We can deduce quite a lot about where consciousness is at work in other species (and where it isn’t), which leads on to the possibility of deducing how it evolved.
It’s also known which bit of the primate brain must support practical reasoning, such as is involved in the manufacture and use of simple tools – an area which in us has expanded to allow the evolution of abstract reason.
