Poverty was a feature of life in the third decade of the twentieth century; a condition not cushioned by the benefits common in the later decades of the century.

The twin philosophies of Fascism and Communism flourished in the middle years of the century when a regime of medieval barbarism, not known for years, was introduced.

The population bore the frustrations of life with fortitude, bolstered by occasional swigs of fire water!

There was a supportive and clearly defined network of morals and customs. Religion played a prominent part in life and denominational boundaries were clearly marked.

The story reveals the prominence of the contribution of women to life. Women brought up children, in many cases in conditions of hardship; women tried to find political solutions to poverty, and dealt with the tragic consequences when political solutions were found.

Children too contributed to the tapestry of life. Their humour and lively ideas added leaven to the dough of the 1930’s and 40’s.
