In his thought-provoking book Christopher Meakin, a former Fleet Street journalist, policy director and international banker, sets out to rebuild the architecture of economics. It looks beyond Adam Smith’s focus on markets, or Karl Marx’s preoccupation with labour, or Maynard Keynes’s analysis of employment and interest. Instead this book examines how economies began, and suggests thinking should be based on that instead.

The central theme is mankind’s 11,000 year development of credit. The book traces it from the beginning of farming, to the first evidence of writing in Mesopotamia, to the invention of money in Greece, to the creation of banking in renaissance Italy and to central banking in Great Britain – and so beyond money to the credit and debit cards of our own time.
